Confessions of a sew-a-holic

Yesterday, I had a whole list of things “to do”. My “To Do” list. Not a lot of fun things. Housework. Things that just needed to be done. And, I just didn’t want to DO any of them. So, I came in my sewing room and got lost in sewing for pretty much the whole day. None of the things I DIDN’T do on the list were pressing. No one except for me will even notice that I did not put a load of laundry in or sweep the kitchen floor. But, I was procrastinating for sure!
Sewing as a procrastination method? Yes.
Sometimes when I’m just down in the dumps or not in a happy mood, OR unhappy and struggling with one thing or another, I will come in to my sewing room and make something. And, you know what? It does make me happier. No, it doesn’t actually solve any problems, but it can make them go away for a time.
Sewing is therapy? Yes.

If I’m on the internet and I see a garment, top, dress, jacket or whatever, I will save a picture of the item to see if I can make it. Then I will search for fabric and pattern that will come close to the inspiration photo and see if I can make a version that is just right for me. I love to do that! Another thing I love to do with my sewing is make something I just want, right now. Example. Today is chilly, I have the urge to make a pair of comfy pants. Or, I’m getting ready for church and I don’t like any of my clothing options. That gives me the urge to make a new dress. I love that I can literally create what ever I want in the moment. Limited by my skill level, of course!
Sewing is a wish fulfillment? Yes.
I love puzzles. I always have. And, now with cellphones and tablets, there are a ton of games and puzzles to play!! I often think of sewing as a puzzle game. Just big pieces that have to be put together a certain way to finish. Some sewing puzzles are easy and some are exremely complicated. And, I love both. I love to finish something quick and easy and I also love the challenge of something complicated. So, next time you pull out your phone to play a game, consider pulling out your hobby instead. There is something to doing things “in real life” that is so satisfying. Take time to think and figure out how things work, touching your materials, trying different solutions, making things in your own way. I love to break all the rules!!
Sewing is a puzzle. Yes.

Whether your hobby is sewing, like mine, or something else, cooking, crafting, painting…it’s such a blessing to have this thing that is just there, waiting for me. Do you have that in your life?
Having hobbies is a wonderful creative outlet. Especially as you age. At least that’s true for me. And, as I get older and life gets less complicated, I simply add more hobbies. Hmmm. Good problem?
I don’t think I would understand someone who didn’t have hobbies. What do you do with all those creative ideas? Where would you put your energy when you have time to do what ever you want?
Out of all the hobbies I have collected in my lifetime, sewing is the one that always calls me back. What’s yours?
